Working On a Work-in-Progress

A lot of firsts for us lately. The first time we’ve planned out a whole year of theater. The first time we’ve received any kind of grant funding. And now, our first time performing a staged reading of a work-in-progress. I suppose for an emerging theater company like us, everything’s going to be a first for a while.

In a classically spirally way, we’re blending genre and form. Yes, it’ll be a normal staged reading with music stands and scripts in hands and stage directions being read out loud. But also! it’s going to feel as if you are the live studio audience experiencing the live recording of a live radio show.

The would-be stage manager reading stage directions is now the host of Spiral Theater’s Mystery Radio Hour. The cast is equipped with all the bells, whistles, shoe boxes, bowling balls, stalks of celery, metal thingies, and wooden whatevers to bring you in-the-moment practical sound effects.

And even then! we’re swirling the rules farther by putting in scripted ad breaks and interruptions of breaking news! It’s pretty wild.

We hope to see you on March first, second, or fourth. Maybe you’ll be the first in line and the first to pick your seats. Either way, we’ll be the first to say how happy we are you’re part of our incredibly fulfilling journey.
